Hyracotherium was ancestral to modern-day horses, as well as numerous species of prehistoric horse that roamed the plains of the Tertiary and Quaternary periods. As with many such evolutionary precursors, Hyracotherium didn't look much like a "true" horse, with its slender body and three- and four-toed feet.
