In most ways, Dsungaripterus ("Junggar Basin wing") was a typical pterosaur of the early Cretaceous period, with large, leathery wings, hollow bones, and a long neck and head. Its most unusual feature of this flying reptile was its beak, which curved upward at the tip, an adaptation that likely helped it spear fish or pry shellfish from the undersides of rocks. Dsungaripterus also possessed an unusual crest on its snout, which was probably a sexually selected characteristic (that is, males with bigger crests had a better chance of mating with females, or vice-versa).
