Balloonasaurus Rex

Tuesday July 8, 2008

Jeremy Telford, the "Balloon Guy," recently created a life-sized T. Rex skeleton out of 2,300 balloons, a week-long project that called on the talents of seven full-time balloon twisters (Jeremy and Kristin Telford, Timothy "Paco", Travis Hadley, Justin James, Brendan Rowlands, and Heather Jensen) and one paleontology student (Andrew Stanton). The giant Balloonasaur was built, bone by laborious bone, after the reconstructed skeleton of the world-famous Tyrannosaurus Sue, and it's on view for the next few days at the Museum of Natural History in Lehi, Utah. Click here to see how it was done.

Well, well…those among us with terrible senses of humor will finally get the chance to say T. Rex went from being a bonehead to an air head…. ;-D

(13) Stan says:

If this guy goes swimming in Nevada, our ichthyosaur will bite him and burst his bubbles.

July 8, 2008 at 12:19 pm
(14) Andrew Stanton (not to be confused with the Pixar guy) says:

For those that may not be familiar it is at the Museum of Ancient Life at Thanksgiving Point. As far as swimming in Nevada with the Shonisaurus, ‘Bubbles’ would probably blow away before she gets there. The whole balloon skeleton is so light that it sways a little when the air conditioning kicks in, or when someone opens the front door.

This is pretty much the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while. I’m only sorry that I’m out of state for the summer and only get to see the pics. (funny that it sways in the AC.)

(21) George Comstock says:

Love the contrast between ballons’ fragility and the T-Rex’ alleged ferocity. Folks *gotta* look a the link photos, the one here doesn’t show the awesome scale of this model.

(22) Vanessa Richins says:

They said the dinosaur would be taken down after the birthday party is over on Friday. I know they put a special additive called hyfloat in so that it would stay longer.

And, you can order bags of specific colors. There’s a great place in Salt Late to get balloons and stuff, though they may have had to order this color. I made a balloon Stegosaurus once…though it was *only* about the size of a couch :)

How long is this dinosaur going to last, by the way? If it took a week just to make, it just makes me curious.

(35) Kristin Telford says:

Jeremy is a Recreation Management major in college. He was able to use his learning to manage our team and organize the build. We ordered the “Mocha Brown” colored balloons from tmyers.com and the Hi-Float solution (from Zurchers in Orem) that we tested with a one-balloon dog (it lasted over a month) should help Bubbles to stay mostly inflated for the rest of the week (two weeks total for the build and display).
